My brother and sister inlaw sent me some gifts and small amount of money for my new baby, should I thank them?

I received a small gift and some money from my brother and his wife for my new baby girl.
Should I thank them? Is it always important to thank someone for a gift and how should I do it, card, note, SMS(text message) phone call?

The gift was personal in nature therefore a personal thank you is proper. I would go with a nice thank you card a brief mesage and a baby picture would be great. This is just common courtesy.
