Saving Money on School Supplies
School supplies are a necessary but often expensive purchase. This can be especially true in families with several school age children. It can be very frustrating to spend money on needed supplies that are hardly ever used. It is possible to get the school supplies that you need without spending a fortune. These tips will help you save money on your school supplies.
Shop the sales. School supplies generally go on sale right before school resumes. These sales often offer needed supplies at a fraction of their regular price. Stock for the year entire year at these back to school sales. Purchase several boxes of crayons, pads of paper, markers, pencils and other needed items. Store these needed items away and use them as necessary. Purchasing enough for the year at these sales can save a great deal of money.
Recycle and reuse when possible. While it is fun to get a new backpack every year, it is not usually necessary. Look through last year’s school supplies and see what can be reused. Wash old backpacks in the washing machine to clean them and prepare them for a new year. Crayons, pencils and rulers may also be able to be used again.
Only buy necessary items. Often school provide a list of needed supplies. These lists generally include items that will never be used. Look over your suggested list and determine if all the items will be needed. Talking with your child’s teacher may also provide a little insight to the items actually needed.
Teach your children to conserve. Talk with your children about conservation and saving money. They may have ideas to get more use out of their school supplies. Additionally, you may want to consider using old school pens and pencils in your home office rather than purchasing new items. This will allow your children to enjoy some new items while still saving you money. Saving money on school supplies is possible through careful planning and conservation. For families on a budget, these savings are very important.
